Virgo Musings

She is self possessed. She is humble. She is practical. She knows her place in the natural order of things. She is always learning. She is Virgo.

Welcome Virgo season! Virgo is a mutable Earth sign. Mutable signs are flexible, adaptable and able to hold seeming polarities. Earth signs are about the body, the physical plane and manifestation.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, planet of communication and knowledge, the messenger between this world and the underworld. Whereas Gemini, also ruled by Mercury, governs learning on the intellectual plane, Virgo governs practical intelligence and learning that pertains to our life on the physical plane. Organizing, decluttering, letting go of what no longer serves, as a tree let’s go of it’s wilted leaves. This is Virgo Wisdom.

Our ballad for Virgo season is Lullabies of Surrender. This song reflects our interconnectedness with the natural world and the sense of belonging we can find there. The archetype of the virgin (Virgo) is one who belongs only to herself and, as an earth sign, is deeply connected to nature. This is the aspect of our being that knows herself holy when communing in solitude with the vastness of the natural world. Lullabies of Surrender looks to the mutability of leaves, once green and vibrant, growing dark and dry, to reflect upon the transiency of all life. This song is about the coexistence of life and death, the simultaneity of grief and joy.

Each zodiacal sign can be divided into thirds called decans, Each decan holds a different aspect of the sign's overall nature. The third deacon of Virgo relates to the temporality of the natural world, that all that comes in to be in will perish. It is this dimension of Virgo that Lullabies of Surrender relates to the most.

As Spiral Muse prepares for our first concert since February 2020, we find ourselves simultaneously in celebration and in mourning. Vaccination makes it possible for musicians to perform publicly again and for humanity to share in the joy and prayer that live music can provide. This celebration is tempered by the very real threat the virus still poses, particularly to the unvaccinated, as the vast majority of COVID hospitalizations and deaths are among unvaccinated people. Duality abounds. We celebrate gathering in a beautiful outdoor greenhouse space, surrounded by the splendor of vibrant plants and flowers.

And we mourn the reality that our Earth, our home, has been irrevocably damaged in our lifetime and that the ravages of fire, flood, disease and other climate-change-related disasters will only worsen in the coming decades. On a more personal level, Spiral Muse celebrates the opportunity to perform once again, to collaborate with new musicians, develop new songs and step into a new chapter. Simultaneously, we grieve the ending of the first incarnation of Spiral Muse and the creative potential that entity possessed. No song holds these dualities more than Lullabies of Surrender. As such, at our upcoming concert, it will be the song that symbolically transitions us from the old Spiral Muse into the new.

May the inherent timeliness of the natural world imbue our consciousness. May we know when to fight and when to let go, when to hold on to the familiar and when to release our grip and dangle in the void before the new has arrived. May we be reborn through this grief and ReEmerge into wisdom and compassion.
