Capricorn Musings

She is the foundation, the stones, the structure, the bones holding up the earth. She is Capricorn.

The zodiacal sign of Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Earth signs are associated with the physical world and our embodied experience. Cardinal signs are sparks or initiators and also mark the beginning of a three month season. Capricorn marks the beginning of winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. The symbol for Capricorn is a sea-goat, a mythical creature that represents the evolution of sea life to life on land. This mythology points to our origins, inviting us to look back at where we come from.

Stones and bones and origins naturally point us to the archeological and visionary remembering of our song Mountain Mother. Tens of thousands of years of archeological memory show us the Goddess, the Great Mother carved into stone, a spirituality and way of living centering on the reverence of the Earth and the Mother as bringer of life.

Capricorn is ruled by the planet Saturn, associated with structures, authority, time, and, ironically, patriarchy. But we know better. The archetypal energy underlying these man-made names are older, wiser and far more embodied. As the faulty structures of patriarchal religions and militaristic, colonial and capitalist governments are exposed and begin to crumble, we are called back further in time to remember when our foundation had a feminine face. A time when the structures that governed our lives arose from the natural rhythms and provisions of the seasons and the embodied world.

We are also called to look forward, at the same time we look back (because time is spiralic), to discover the structures we are aching to create. How do we find our new structures? Perhaps in dreams, in reverie, in the vision of the poets, the dancers, the oracles, the prophets (or Truth-Tellers), singers, weavers, drummers, healers and teachers.

Capricorn guides us to patiently trust the process we are experiencing. She invites us to take a leap of faith regarding Divine Timing, allowing our actions to arise from Wisdom rather than impatience or fear. Action is necessary. Timing is everything.

Note: This is the second in a thirteen chapter journey through the songs of Somebody Calling, and the zodiacal calendar. Full disclaimer, I am a psychotherapist, I am not an astrologer, so my musings on the zodiacal energies of these songs is that of a layperson.
