Aries Musings

I am passion. I am anger. I am action. I am warrior. I am destruction and I am protection. I am Aries.

We are in the zodiacal season of Aries, the first sign in the zodiac. Aries is a cardinal fire sign. Fire signs are creative, passionate and driven. Cardinal signs are initiators, the sparks that light the flames. This makes Aries the great initiator, the igniter of the flame of action. Aries season marks not only the beginning of the zodiacal calendar but also the end of winter and beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere. A light emerging from the darkness, a sprout poking through the formerly frozen earth.

Each sign has its enlightened form and it’s distorted one. In it’s twisted and unevolved form, Aries is selfish fueled by aggression and sadism. When Aries has passed through the fires of consciousness and is exalted, we see the fiercest protector and defender of those who are in danger and have been harmed. The distorted Aries says “I am superior. I do and take what I want.” The enlightened Aries says “I am sacred, my flame is sacred, my action must be for the highest good of all beings.”

We see the story of destructive Aries and conscious Aries in the song "I Say No." This song journeys into the underworld of sexual violence, rape culture and misogyny. The Aries energy moving through the song fights back, says No, asserts healthy boundaries and dedicates herself to the protection and healing of all who have been harmed. This Aries fights for justice, is a warrior who protects. The energy of initiating and protecting sacred boundaries is the Aries of this song.

The ruling planet of Aries is Mars, the planet associated with aggression, action, masculinity and war. Mars is driven, and can demonstrate tremendous courage. Although we typically think of courage as bravery, when we look at the Latin root of the word, cor, which means heart, we understand this word to mean “with heart.” To act with courage is to act from the seat of the soul's compassion, the wise and fearless heart. We see this courage in the #metoo movement, in #BlackLivesMatter, in all actions taken to further justice and end oppression and harm.

Where is courage calling you right now? What sacred action is your heart longing to take? It could be an interpersonal boundary, a creative project, social action, a new professional endeavor or anything that reclaims you sacred worth and honors the holiness of all beings. May Aries' purified flame guide you in the month to come.
